I had installed imap.rpm from Red Hat 6.2 CD. It contains ipop3d server. However there
is no option for debugging for it. Nothing is given in man pages. If I type ipop3d -h
it starts the pop3 server, no switches etc.
However after doing rpm -ql imap i saw pam.d :
------------------------------------------------
rpm -qrajesh@suselinux:~ > rpm -ql imap
/etc/pam.d/imap
/etc/pam.d/pop
/usr/doc/imap-4.7
/usr/doc/imap-4.7/README
/usr/man/man8/imapd.8c.gz
/usr/man/man8/ipopd.8c.gz
/usr/sbin/imapd
/usr/sbin/ipop2d
/usr/sbin/ipop3d
rajesh@suselinux:~ >

In /etc/pam.d/ there is a file called pop which contained the following :
------------------------------------------------
#%PAM-1.0
auth required /lib/security/pam_pwdb.so shadow nullok
account required /lib/security/pam_pwdb.so
------------------------------------------------
I commented the above two lines and restarted inetd and voila now my pop3 server is
working.
Thanks sree, suresh for all the help.
Is pop3 using pam authentication ? I will go through the documentation of PAM. Don't
know much about it.
Why using PAM for authentication fails for pop3 server ?
Warm Regards
