Binand Raj S. saw fit to inform me that:

I did not find any pop3 server on SuSE CD, hence installed imap rpm from Red Hat 6.2.
>> In /etc/pam.d/ there is a file called pop which contained the following :
>> #%PAM-1.0
>> auth required /lib/security/pam_pwdb.so shadow nullok
>> account required /lib/security/pam_pwdb.so

No Binand. Giving wrong password does not authenticate ( err-bad login ).
I even tried by giving wrong username. If I give wrong username it asks from the
password,
after putting some xyz password error message ( err - bad login ).
Surprising. Where pop3 does its authentication ? Since I have commented the PAM lines,
it is not using PAM authentication.

Do you have any good links on some reading material on PAM authentication ?

>As I mentioned, cross distro incompatibilities. I'd say for SuSE, a sample

>#%PAM-1.0

>account required /lib/security/pam_unix.so
Now I have put the above lines as given by you in /etc/pam.d/pop. After restarting
inetd now pop3 works fine.
Thanks
