from what sreeji forwarded me, that's the "receiver lockaround" bug in eepro
cards - known, unfixed bug
this hassle is generally when the comp is powered off without shutting it down
properly
in that case, /etc/rc.d/init.d/network restart should fix it (see if the
drivers are loaded correctly though, if not insmod them again)
