The reason, as I said, is that the older version of kppp does not work with the
newer kernel versions. I had the same problem when I upgraded to 2.4.0-test1
kernel version.

There is a simple way to test whether the problem is with ppp or with kppp. In the
ppp directory you will find two dialling scripts. Follow the installation
directions (remember that for VSNL the initial query is username, not login, so
you have to make some modifications in the dial-in scripts). If the scripts work,
that obviously means that the problem is with kppp, not ppp.

If that is so (and from my own experience, I suspect it is) you can try upgrading
to a new version of kppp. Instead of doing that, I installed KDE 2.0. The kppp on
KDE 2.0 is superb, and has no bugs that I know of.
