Your motorola SM56 modem might not work with Linux, but you had better check at 
http://www.linmodems.org. If it is supported, you'll get the necessary information 
there. As to setting up ppp read this document:
http://axion.physics.ubc.ca/ppp-linux.html. You might also want to take a look at 
wvdial which is prolly the best of the console dialers.
