exactly what I said ... you have to use login-pass as an auth mechanism in
linux

Workaround - does your network use nat / ipmasq?  In that case, you can set the
smtp server to localhost happily (if outbound port 25 is not firewalled on your
network - not very likely to be ...)

I'm doing that - it works very well :)

Oh btw, why dont you consider sticking a sendmail / other decent (read: unix)
MTA in front of that exchange box (and use the mailertable to deliver incoming
mail to your exchange server)? 

Exchange is seriously broken in more ways than one ...
