I call it cracking and not hacking. Or do you mean there's a difference between:
"This guy's door is open, so I'll just walk in"
"This guy's door is not locked properly, I'll break the lock and walk in"
both ways, if you walk in, you are trespassing on the guy's property, so if he
calls the cops / has his dog bite you, you are not in any position to complain
