I hope that you didn't wait that many seconds before posting to the list!
(It turns out to be 4 years and 3 months)

fetchmail's default listener is sendmail - so check if sendmail is
running on the machine.  Try the command telnet 0 smtp and hear what
sendmail has to tell.  Check the logs also, sendmail might be loggin
something if it is running.
