Where did you get X 4.x for potato? I thought it was no longer part of
potato.

Actually, there are three choices: dpkg, dselect and apt-get. dpkg is the
equivalent of rpm. dselect is a nice text menu driven thing. And apt-get
is a very sophisticated package management tool.
Dselect is just a front end to dpkg. They both use the same backend
database - i.e. /var/lib/dpkg/available
apt-get uses its own database under /var/cache/apt/
When you choose apt as a method in dselect, you are syncing both the
backend databases.
I typically use dpkg to install already downloaded individual .debs. I use
apt-get to download and install new software packages. I use dselect when
I want to search through my list of installed and available packages.

Install and run dexter.
