Also trap the error messages i.e. do 'startx >err 2>&1'. Check the top of file to see
that which XF86Config is
used.
It happened once that I backed up XF86Config in my root dir. and then no change would
take effect as it was
looking into current dir. first. Learned that bit hard way...
