i don't know the details, but modems compress *all* data, irrespective
of the type.

since the modem can not compres a zip file anyway, the download speed
for a zip wil b slower. on the other hand, text files can b compresed
and hence they *seem* to be downloading faster, as it is the (g)zip
which is downloaded and then (g)unziped on the receiving end.
