I have been planning since long to put an end to my doubts about vsnl's
ppp compression and optimal mtu selection, but never followed it up
thouroughly.
For mtu what I had done was set the default to 1500. Then I pinged
someone ( the nameserver or my immediate peer ) with increasing packet
sizes i.e with the -s option. Finally I calculated the avg throughput by
dividing the packet size by the avg time ( for some 10 runs ). This
'through put vs packet size' I plotted with gnuplot, but there were no
clear trend. I guess I have to take an average of longer runs. Moreover
the server latency impedes a clear interpretation.
For the compression part I will have to time the downloads with different
compression settings.
