Yes - it helps a _lot_ as a firewall.  You wouldn't use firewalls as servers,
mind you ... a firewall has a _very_ skeleton set of services running on it.

So people say - and yeah, it's quite true.  But then, BSD can be a bitch to use
if you are looking for something user friendly (by default, only members of
group wheel can su root ...) :)
