On closer examination i found that /etc/shadow was not there at all. I am
confident i did not delete it. And I am also sure I have disabled shadow
password while installation it self.
I feel pam causing the problem.
How do i disable pam?

Thank god I had a few more user with uid/gid=0.
I think I have messed up a lot and reinstallation is the only option.
