Hi,
If this excercise is for getting into your machine after having forgotten
the root pasword, here's a nifty suggestion... use a LOAF floppy
from http://www.toms.net/rb/ (download an image & mk the floppy)
to boot into ur system & mount the root partition & copy ur files
elsewhere...
