ppp should be compiled as a module (and slip, slhc etc - nearby).
select m instead of y when asked in make menuconfig
Then do a depmod -a first before modprobeing it.
Finally get a stable kernel (2.4.1 or 2.4.2 final versions) instead of using a test
version. It's not that elite to reinvent the wheel by still running broken -test
kernels which have been upgraded and released :)
