this is because you have either not at all compiled ppp ( found under
Networking options) or you have compiled it as a module. in which case, i use
these lines in my /etc/modules.conf :
# ppp configuration
alias char-major-108 ppp_generic
alias /dev/ppp ppp_generic
alias tty-ldisc-3 ppp_async
alias tty-ldisc-14 ppp_synctty
alias ppp-compress-21 bsd_comp
alias ppp-compress-24 ppp_deflate
alias ppp-compress-26 ppp_deflate
1. check if ppp is compiled by running make menuconfig / make xconfig and
looking under networking options
2, if it is module - insert above lines
3. if it is not checked at all - do so,
