Thanks a bunch, "#modprobe snd-*-oss" was the trick. I
donot know why it did not load snd-pcm-oss and
snd-mixer-oss at boot time although I had set an alias
in modules.conf file. The alsa INSTALL document was
vague about it in DEVFS section. Anyhow now it is
working like a charm.
