This is a common problem with fips. use gnu parted
http://www.gnu.org/software/parted/parted.html
or if the HDD has no data reformat and reinstall everything. Linux does
have plenty of math packages (including statistics) like Scilab
(alternative to Matlab). A search on Google will many others.
