There is one called octave which I had used during B. Tech. days as an
alternative to Matlab. It could run matlab's .m source files without
much modifications even then, and I have heard that it has matured
tremendously in the past few years. It is a beast though - took me a few
hours to compile then (only package that I know which is written partly
in C, partly in C++ and partly in Fortran :-)
