I have a Compaq Presario 1600XL with Win98SE preinstalled. I have read
somewhere that Compaqs come with a hidden partition, where they store a
tweaked bios, some configuration files etc., and that if I use FIPS
carelessly, I will not be able to dual boot into Windows. I have not been
able to find any hidden partition.

When I try to use fips2.0 to shrink the C partition (the only one visible
with fdisk, by the way), fips exits with the following message:

Last cylinder is not free
Since the new partition is created at the end of the old one and
contains at least one cylinder, the partition can not be split if
not at least the very last cylinder is completely free.
Probably there is a hidden file like 'image.idx' or 'mirorsav.fil'
in the last cylinder - see the doc.

I _did_ defragment the drive _immediately_ before I rebooted with the fips
floppy.

I want to continue using Windows, as there are no suitable
statistical packages for Linux (such as Epi-info, SPSS etc).

Can anybody help me?

Thanks.

Narayana
