Ofcourse if the user connects to the internet like once a day or even less then download serialmail from http://cr.yp.to/serialmail.html and read the file TOISP under the source tree. I wouldnt waste bandwidth pasting the complete file here :). BTW maildirsmtp is part of the serialmail package. My previous solution is for a user who is frequently connecting to the net on a dialup and who need to send out emails as soon as possible like a SOHO maybe ....
