I have a i810 with 8.4 G hdd with Win 98 in 6 G and rest as / and 120m swap
for RHL.
I had a perfectly (almost) well behaved install of PCQ RH 6.1 with X
configured on my S3 card. The mobo did not have a USB port so I had to
change to an i810 mobo. To get X on the new mobo I upgraded the kernel to
2.2.16-3 from PCQ. I followed the article, modified lilo.conf and could boot
into both my 2.2.12 as well as my 2.2.16 kernel. I could not configure X as
the card was not auto selected in Xconfigurator as mentioned in Shanu's
guide at exocore.com. Seeing that he mentions RH 6.2, I decided to upgrade
my distro to 6.2. I booted from the cd, chose the upgrade option.
When I rebooted, it came to LI and then stopped. Now what the error code
says is:
LI The first stage boot loader was able to load the second stage
boot loader, but has failed to execute it. This can either be
caused by a geometry mismatch or by moving /boot/boot.b without
running the map installer.
This is what my lilo.conf looks like:
boot=/dev/hda
map=/boot/map
install=/boot/boot.b
prompt
timeout=50
default=dos
image=/boot/vmlinuz
label=linux
initrd=/boot/initrd.img
root=/dev/hda7
image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.12-20
label=linuxold
initrd=/boot/initrd-2.2.12-20.img
read-only
root=/dev/hda7
other=/dev/hda1
label=dos
notice it still mentions 2.2.12.20 though the default kernel with RH 6.2
should be 2.2.14. so the upgrade did not touch the lilo.conf, WHY ?
so now what do I do ?
/boot/vmlinuz points to vmlinuz-2.2.14-12 whereas I had already set it to
point to vmlinuz 2.2.16
I did a fdisk /mbr from the Win98 starup disk and got windoze working, but
now what ? How do I rescue my linux installaion. A reinstall is not what I
want to do.
regards,
Sharukh
