Pradeep,

The Problem is VERY simple to solve. Please DONOT listen to anyone saying
that you need an extenal "real" modem to work with linux.

This modem is a "Linmodem" that is it has SOME(maybe most) components that
make the modem work missing(!) and the CPU has to do the job of
these"missing" components.Since you have a *fast* CPU it does not make much
of a difference.

There is no way as such to "detect" the modem using a standard linux distro,
but you can get it working by loading a driver module viz. pctel_pci.o
available from http://www.eastwind.com.au/pctel.htm .just put it in
/lib/modules/<kernel_version>/net .Also read the documentation on the
website and configure ur system accordingly.also read the Linmodem-HOWTO if
u want more info.

I have struggled a lot to get this modem working and hope that you don't
have to work so much ;-) to get it running.I haven't used the above module
as i use RH6.2 with kernel 2.2.14 i have tried the modem on kernel
COL(2.2.5),SuSE( 2.2.13) and RH6.2 with kernel 2.4.1 it works fine(i have a
667Mhz P-III).I don't think it will have any problem except using <insmod -f
pctel_pci.o> instead of <insmod pctel_pci.o> just in case there is a kernel
mismatch.

Regards,

Amit Shirodkar.
