|Pradeep,
|
|The Problem is VERY simple to solve. Please DONOT listen to anyone saying
|that you need an extenal "real" modem to work with linux.
This line is totally uncalled for. Every lister has a right to share the
information.
|
|This modem is a "Linmodem" that is it has SOME(maybe most) components that
|make the modem work missing(!) and the CPU has to do the job of
|these"missing" components.Since you have a *fast* CPU it does not make much
|of a difference.
Linmodem is a parallel word to win modem. As on today only few of win modem
are Linmodem
|
|There is no way as such to "detect" the modem using a standard linux
distro,
|but you can get it working by loading a driver module viz. pctel_pci.o
|
External modem can be detected by number of utilities like minicom, wvdial.
available from http://www.eastwind.com.au/pctel.htm .just put it in
|/lib/modules/<kernel_version>/net .Also read the documentation on the
|website and configure ur system accordingly.also read the Linmodem-HOWTO if
|u want more info.
|I have struggled a lot to get this modem working and hope that you don't
|have to work so much ;-) to get it running.I haven't used the above module
|as i use RH6.2 with kernel 2.2.14 i have tried the modem on kernel
|COL(2.2.5),SuSE( 2.2.13) and RH6.2 with kernel 2.4.1 it works fine(i have a
|667Mhz P-III).I don't think it will have any problem except using
<insmod -f
|pctel_pci.o> instead of <insmod pctel_pci.o> just in case there is a kernel
|mismatch.
The lin modem modules are chip set specific and will not work on all the Lin
modem.
The driver for Motorola and conexant chip set modem are still not available.
