wvdial has this feature that makes it useable as a 'chat' replacement. So any 
front-end you can think of - that uses chat, can be replaces with an 
appropriate invocation of wvdial. 

If you use Windowmaker (the best WM in my opinion - no flames please! ;) 
There're a couple of dock-apps that work great - even on their own..
