What do u mean my 'put my old one in a different dir' ?

Why ? What error are u getting ? At what stage is the new
kernel giving problem ? Have u done make install;make
modules_install ?

What kernel ver. was your old kernel and what kernel are u
trying to compile ?

During kernel compile what I do is. make menuconfig gave me
the required configuration and I save this to a file
debian24.config. Everytime I have to recompile a new kernel
I just load this file. So simple if u keep a copy of the
file with your customised kernel configuration.

I remove all kernel sources after recompilation. I get a deb
file using make-kpkg and than I just do dpkg -i <deb file>
:-)

Now I have got a deb file for each version of the kernel (
my customised kernel ).

Warm Regards
