just put my old kernel into another directory and pointed lilo to it

Can't mount root filesystem on bla, bla, bla - same as if I've pointed the
wrong partition to the kernel in lilo.conf. But had different errors, because
I experimented a lot after not being able to boot the new one.

Should have done that before, but nobody adivsed me :-).

Not bad!
My aim is to start all over again compiling my old kernel step by step - the
first time I changed a lot of things at a time and that's why I just can't
figure out what exactly the reason for it is. How can I go back to that stage?
