No, I didn't do anything to the kernel.

All I did is this.  I had mandrake 8.0 on one
partition.  I installed Redhat 7.1 in another
partition and modified lilo.conf of mandrake to
include redhat also in its menu.  It did work.  After
doing this, I could boot to all three (winNT, mandrake
and redhat).  But the next time, I added some more
entries giving different names to the same things. 
Only after this, I  couldn't boot to windows.  Fdisk
in linux shows /dev/hda1 as FAT16(which is right) but
would not mount it.  DOS fdisk shows that partition as
"unknown".

fdisk /mbr also didn't work out.
