there used to be script called makedevice which ran mknod with the correct
major minors based on their names, but thats besides the point, i guess.

Even if the device file is screwed how does it work for suse. Something
strange is going out here. Would be interested in what "file" says on that
device or ls -l; and the perms of /dev/mouse.
