 It is not a beta ... but it is not a very good version either.  Custom
 patched redhat version, as a matter of fact.

 From the gcc release logs at gcc.gnu.org -

*       June 18, 2001
        gcc-3.0 has been released.
*       March 16, 2001
        gcc-2.95.3 has been released.

No mention of any 2.96.x versions at all.
