I don't think VSNL allows people on other ISPs networks to use their
DNS... so the best way to check if you are really connected to the net is
to ping an external machine... 

first ping your remote IP ... then try pinging IPs that are on dishnets
network(DNS servers) and other machines in your own subnet.. then you can
try machines elsewhere in the world.

call dishnet and ask them for all their DNS servers.. most ISPs normally
have a LOT more than the 2-3 that they give you! (I have more than 10 DNS
entries for VSNL and they are from bangalore alone!!)
