I used to have .fetchmailrc that retrieved me mails from various
popservers, then read them
through mutt, and sent mails thru exim.
Fetchmail does a good job than mutt with pop servers, though mutt has
inbuilt capability. RTFM of mutt
if you want to use mutt for pop retrieving.
Sendmail or exim has to be running for you to send mails out from
your system.
