Yes, 3mb of  space is enough for Linux.  Thinkpad takes Linux.
Because of the need to  configure atypical hardware support it
may not be so  easy for a beginner ... you  could do well with
some local help in this regard. See if there are some geeks in
your neighbourhood who can be coaxed.

There is nothing called Linux2.0 !  If it is kernel 2.0.x that
you are talking about it  reached obsolescence last year. Most
laptops  available  in  India  can take  kernel  2.2.x.  Newer
kernels now are of 2.4.x series.

This  is  a   long  topic.  Please  get  hold   of  any  Linux
distribution  CD  and  read  all README  files  pertaining  to
installation, lilo and loadlin ..... Dual boot is very much in
vogue.
