Mukesh,

This may confuse Prakash. For dual boot, there are just
three options available:

   a) Boot through Win-2k in MBR and call up Linux through
"loadlin" in which case the files to be tackled are
msdos.sys, config.sys and (maybe) autoexec.bat, if he opts
not to use the config.sys for loading linux.

   b) Boot through LILO in MBR (viz through Linux). The file
   to be tackled is /etc/lilo.conf

   c) Use third party boot loaders in MBR like partition
magic, grub etc where none of the above are needed.

AFAIK, there is no way you can call up Linux through
win.ini except for specialised software like lin4win and
vmware. In which case it is not a dual boot system and a
somewhat dwarfed Linux runs as a child process under Win-2k.

First of all let him just load Linux on his Thinkpad. Its
not an easy process. I don't have a portable, but I have
installed two for friends ... for both I had to make custom
kernels for for full hardware support, and each took 2 to 3
days, with lots of trials and RTFMs !

He needs local support from someone in his vicinity for a
first time installation ... for a newbie it is difficult.
Partitioning and marking the partition-ids are critical, or he
may lose what's on his Win-2k partition. HOWTOs don't help
here, since they are NOT installed as yet.
