This "Ctrl-Esc" route is not in "Xfree". I am not sure if this
is distro specific patch ... Normally, Ctrl-Alt-BkSpc would be
the key sequence to bail out of X into console ... However, if
his system is set for an initlevel of 5, he will re-enter xdm.

There are two aspects to his problem:

a) To get out of X (immediate problem)
b) To avoid booting into X (long term)

For the first problem, appropriate responses have already been
given by you. It is a matter of logging into any free console
with Alt-F2 thru 6 as root ... and do what is needed.

For the latter, LOST #016 below needs to be followed ... For
debian, corel and stormix, update-rc.d needs to be used.

It is always better to boot into console and get into X with
startx script.

Bish.

To boot into console instead of GUI, when xdm/ gdm/ kdm are
installed, and then get into GUI with "startx", it is just a
matter of setting the initial runlevel in /etc/inittab. Just
amend 5 to 3 as shown in the line below from /etc/inittab.

# Default runlevel. (Do not set to 0 or 6)
id:3:initdefault:
