In kde it's ALT+F1. Mandrake has it as windows key. Do ALT-F2 to run a command
and type konsole to open a console. Find KDE control centre binary. I think it
should be something similar to kcentre. Never required so I don't know...;-)
I don't know how to do that in GNOME.

Run console as I told you in above step(if you are in kde) and su to root. Edit
/etc/inittab. You have to change the runlevel from 5 to 3. /etc/inittab is well
documented and you shouldn't have trouble finding it. After changes are done, do
init 3', again as root.
That's it. Now every time you should get text based login.

You need to format the partition and mount it. Do man/info for following commands
mount
mke2fs
mkreiserfs(If your distro has it)
Also look in /etc/fstab.
