IMAP == Internet Message Access Protocol.

This is basically a way of storing your mailbox on a remote server and
manipulating it from a number of locations. It sports a number of
advantages over POP in that it supports downloading of headers only,
folders, multiple simultaneous access.

This is just a basic intro, I suggest using google for more indepth
information.
