Leave that alone ... dont install X Windows (or at least, don't install kde
or gnome, stick to twm / blackbox)

If you swing that way, sure ... slackware is far better for this IMHO.

There are times it is only during opration you realise that a
CD has unreadable sectors ... To check for read defects do:        
'dd if=/dev/cdrom of=/dev/null' 
All read defects will be reported.
