Thats a good enough system...
(probably you could upgrade your RAM to around 16Mb.

Please try Slackware, again if you are in Bombay, you can borrow my 
copy.

The problem is, most distros other than Slackware expect the system to 
have a Pentium class CPU so they distribute their CDs with a kernel 
which doesn't support the 486 out of the box.

Since you already have a celeron machine where you were able to 
install Linux on your HD, you could go ahead and recompile the kernel 
with support for the 486.
