The problem is, most distros other than Slackware expect the system to have a Pentium class CPU so they distribute their CDs with a kernel which doesn't support the 486 out of the box. Since you already have a celeron machine where you were able to install Linux on your HD, you could go ahead and recompile the kernel with support for the 486.
