I'd second this.  Having  sailed on  both these boats, this is
my personal view. For the kind of hardware he is talking about 
Slack would be the better alternative. Stick to kernel 2.2.xx, 
because of memory constraints. Avoid 2.4.x if in  Slack 8. And 
as Suresh suggested, either No X or minimalistic X with black-
box as WM.
