NAT stands for Network Address Transltion. This is used to allow machines on a lan behind a firewall/gateway to access the internet/external network without having to do anything special on the machines within the LAN. All packets sent by the machines thru the NAT will appear as coming from the gateway but the gateway keeps track of each individual machine and routes incoming packets to the correct machine.
This is a somewhat rough overview of NAT. Search for NAT on google for more specific information. -Naren On Sun, 3 Feb 2002, Vamsi Krishna K-RollNo.2000-134 wrote: > > hai philip, > can u tell me what is NAT and are there any other ways to > connect to the remote systems and receive mails from external systems > please help me please. > > vamsi > > > On Sun, 3 Feb 2002, Philip S Tellis wrote: > > > Sometime Today, Ganesh Netravali assembled some asciibets to say: > > > > > > 192.168.36.200(gdit.iiit.net) > > [snip] > > > > this machine and logon and type "telnet www.google.com". > > > > from my local machine "telnet www.google.com" it is giving error > > > > saying that it cannot connect to the host.i know the name server > > > > ip address. can u tell how to make my local machine telnet to any > > > > server outside the lan. > > > > > > check the default gateway entry, and dns server entries.Use netconfig > > > from console or use netcfg tool from gui mode, to configure network. > > > > He's using a private IP address so he will not be able to initiate a > > connection with any machine outside his lan. > > > > You'll have to set up NAT on your gateway/firewall. > > > > > > > _______________________________________________ > linux-india-help mailing list > [EMAIL PROTECTED] > https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/linux-india-help > _______________________________________________ linux-india-help mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/linux-india-help
