Subash ,
Boot from the CD and at boot prompt (which I indicate as boot:)

Boot:vmlinuz root=/dev/hd< >< >/vmlinuz

In my case , I would have done :
vmlinuz root=/dev/hda8/vmlinuz
At office , may be,
vmlinuz boot=/dev/hda5

The first situation , I have installed my whole Linux onto /
(and I now live to regret that decision).
At office , / , /boot , /home and /usr are on separate partitions -
strategic hindsight.

If you do not know , or have forgotten your partition table
it is trial and error , till you get the letters right.
(If you get it wrong , it goes onto say, "Kernel Panic" )

You could also give
  vmlinuz boot=/dev/hd<><>

depending on your situation.

Wait till somebody , corrects any mistakes
I might have made in this "essay".

Regards,
Shyam
