See if there's a copy of /etc/passwd - like /etc/passwd~ or something
(if you used vi instead of vipw to edit the passwd file for example).

Then get a standard passwd file from another linux box and put it in
... change root password.  Then finally, add the other users manually.

After that, fire your sysadmin, yell at him, or whatever.
