I hope you have used xf86config already. Open /etc/X11/XF86Config[-4] depnding upon X version and check HorizSync and VertRefresh fields. They should be correct. One tip about this is startx looks into curent directory first for XF86Config file. So you can put a file in there for testing purpose. Also check the logs and startx errors for what XF86Config is getting used. If your file is not used then obviously settings in there won't be used.. > Another query what is the difference btween Woody sid & potato types > of debs ? These are cde names of debian releases. Potato is stable release. (No... make that rock solid..). Sid is bleeding edge stuff packages straight from developers. Woody is unstable release. Not recommended for servers but in general works OK. You may experience crashes but nothing show stopper expected.. Wooddy will be next stable release soon. Perhaps in a month or so..
