You don't need to modify XF86Config by hand. Just run xf86config and it will do 
jobs for you. The things you might want to change later is only refresh rates 
if required.

Secondly do you have /dev/mouse correctly configured? Does it work with gpm 
etc. Make sure that you have these basic rights and you shouldn't have any 
problems.

And install KDE and just put exec startkde in .xinitrc. Should land you in 
heaven..;-)
