Sometime on May 15, shyam assembled some asciibets to say:

VNC shares the desktop. This means that the user sitting at the linux
pc, and the one connecting over the network have the same desktop. If
the first user types something, the other sees that. If one moves the
mouse, the other's mouse also moves. This is true even if there are
more than one people in the session. (This is configurable btw).
This makes VNC ideal for an instructor led classroom session (which is
what we use it for at NCST), but not so good as a remote desktop.
Although, I believe it is possible to start a new session, this is
illegal on windows unless you also purchase additional licences.
VNC is also much heavier on the network than X is. VNC sends snapshots
of the desktop across, and mouse and keyboard events as well. X only
sends mouse/keyboard events, and screen drawing directives. In the
worst case, this would mean sending a snapshot of all the windows that
are exported, not the entire desktop.
