Actually, if you had installed a Debian distributed kernel, you just
need to run modconf and enable the appropriate sound module(s). No
recompilation necessary. As for Alsa modules, if you install them, you
need to disable the sound modules in the kernel. It is one or the other.

Sound is one of the most painful things to get working on Linux, IMO.
