Thats what I'd also understood.

I'd recompiled SB support statically into the kernel, but
nothing happened. e.g., when I tried to start aumix, I
received the message:

aumix: error opening mixer.

and the daemon.log reports:
modprobe: can't locate module sound-slot-0
modprobe: can't locate module sound-service-0-0

> You will get a message something like this at kernel

> Soundblaster audio driver Copyright (C) by Hannu
> Savolainen SB 2.01 detected OK (220)

No, I did not get this message! But the dmesg shows:

Sound intialization started
Sound intialization complete

After compiling it as a module, and loading using scripts,
it worked fine.

For an academic discussion: why didn't it work in the first
case?
