Hi,

We have two machines a) running Solaris 8, and b) running RH 7.0 -both are
having public IP's.
>From the linux box I am able to send e-mails to any account eg : yahoo
acoount.
But from the Sun box I am not able to send any mails, smtp error given is
host unknown (550).
>From the linux box I use mail command to send e-mails and from the sun box I
use mailx to do the same job( mailx is same as mail ).

Below is what I understand is pre-requisite for sending an e-mail. Please
correct me if I am wrong.
a) No authentication is required for sending mails.
b) We do need a SMTP server eg : sendmail, postfix. or the mail client
should be configured with the SMTP server IP address.

Sendmail is currently not running on the linux box.and I am unable to telnet
to port 25.
Sendmail is installed and running on the Sun box.
Please can anyone suggest on the following :
a) How can I send e-mail from the Sun Box ?
b) How is the linux box able to send mails outside inspite of not running
any SMTP server ?
c) If at all I need the sun box to accept mails, then it can only be done
for a particular domain with the MX record pointing to the sun box, right ?

Thank you for your time and reply in advance.

Warm regards,
Vijay.
